It was my first time in Ho Chi Minh City and I pre-booked The Sights tour (in the Morning) and The Foodie tour (in the evening) for my first day. Riding on a motorbike with the XO Lady drivers was a great way to acquaint myself with the city! Even though the girls were petite, they had awesome control on their motorbikes, so I didn’t find it scary as they navigated through the HCMC crazy traffic. Some of their destinations were non-touristy, as they thought these are spots uncommonly known to tourists (as compared to other tour groups which bring travellers to spots they can easily just go to).
The Foodie tour was a highlight of my trip as it featured not only some of the known dishes of Saigon, but also some exotic foods that one wouldn’t normally eat. (It’s your choice to be adventurous or not 🙂 This tour was not only about the food, but also experiencing Saigon’s gastronomic adventure with other travellers. In this tour, we also went to different destinations and ate a lot in the span of 4 hours. Be sure to have a lot of space in your tummy before this tour; and to pace yourself while eating. Based on experience, I’m pretty sure you will have a lot of fun in this tour as long as you’re open to eating and to enjoying your time with the other guests and tour guides.
Special thanks to the Tour heads Heiu and Tai; and to my lady drivers Thuy and Tam– they were excellent in doing their jobs on providing information and history, as well as engaging us, their guests, in the whole duration of the tour. You guys are awesome!
The XO tours come with huge acclaim based on reviews by the media and on Trip Advisor etc. So we were quite excited when we booked a Street Food Night Tour with XO on our second night in Saigon.
At USD 72 per person, it’s a premium price. But it delivered on all fronts and was probably the best tour experience I’ve been on in my years of travelling.
For me, the best tours are made by the tour guides. In this case, the food was excellent. Cruising the town on the back of a motorbike / scooter was lots of fun. But the tour experience was 100% made by the guides and the girls in particular.
Each guest gets 1 dedicated girl all night to ride with, help navigate the food, and chat to. A lot of tours come with too high a ratio of guests to guides – here, a 1:1 ratio is spot on and you have a very personalised experience and really do end up getting to know your guide quite well!
My girlfriend and I had the lovely Nhi and Yen respectively and they were a riot. All girls are smart, bring great energy and passion for their country and its food and culture, they speak outstanding English, have a great attitude and want you to have a great time.
Yen and Nhi also had the right amount of sass to make the night so much fun, and it made the whole experience so enjoyable. They all get along really well which makes it feel like you’re hanging out with a big group of friends.
We ended up having a bowl of bun bo Hue at our first stop, and then lots of grilled meats and beer at two other stops. Definitely try the grilled goat, the grilled frog (with skin on) and the crab. Also, it’s effectively all you can eat so you won’t go hungry.
I loved every minute of this tour and didn’t want it to end. The food was delicious and along with the opportunity to see the streets of Saigon as the locals would, this is worth the price alone. The tour leader (Tai) was also very knowledgeable and led proceedings really well.
However, for me, this is all about the girls. They are great representatives of Vietnam today and I would encourage everybody to do the tour because Yen, Nhi and the girls make this tour.
Nga and Tung provided a wonderfully memorable Shopping Spree Tour for me. I highly recommend it. First of all, they made sure I was safe on the scooter and then wanted to know exactly what I was looking for or wanted from my tour. They accommodated all my wishes and when I ran out of money Tung even lent me some! What a host. They made me feel like we were friends. They showed me special shops and also where to exchange money to get the best rate. During our tour it rained a little and even rain capes were provided for. They thought of everything! Thanks and this has been a great way to experience Saigon. Good luck with building the business!
Really can’t say enough about these folks. My wife and I are 60-ish, not-altogether-adventurous Americans and had a WONDERFUL time. Not only did we have two totally charming and knowledgeable young women driving us around and providing commentary, but on our trip, the operator of the business, Tung Do, who spent much of his life in the States, accompanied us and offered great info and insights.
We took the trip on our first full-day in HCMC, so it was kind of a highlights tour and a really good way to see the most important sights and get your bearings in the city. If you’ve already seen a bit of the city, I’m sure they can tailor a trip to suit your desires.Though HCMC traffic is truly intimidating to a first-time visitor, you won’t believe how safe you feel with these young women driving. They are experts. (The real saving grace of the local traffic is that it never moves very fast.) In addition, they take photos of you that they will provide later by email.
We were lucky to be able to arrange the trip on the day we called, but it is advisable to book in advance. They do book up. Just do it! It will be one of the most memorable days of your trip.
Fantastic tour guides with the knowledgeable Tung there also to provide extra background and information about Saigon. Loved the day trip of the sights so much, we booked to do the night time tour as well. Day tour was a great way of seeing the sights, and the night time tour was an amazing experience of China Town at night, tasting delicious street food and seeing the parts of Saigon that are not on the regular tours. The girls are very friendly, and we had a great time getting to know them. Felt very safe on the bikes and it really felt like we were being taken around Saigon by friends rather than a tour operator. Highlight of our stay in Saigon.
I work as a chef and I wanted to experience as much of Vietnamese street food as possible in a short amount of time.
Going as a solo traveler I got to hang out with my awesome guide, Dang. The couples in my tour group naturally sat together while their guides hung back a bit but Dang and me got along great. She speaks fluent English and not only understood me perfectly but we joked around and I had a lot of fun as well.
Living in Bangkok I haven’t really felt comfortable with the motorcycle taxis but in Saigon I felt very safe. Dang is a great driver and it was fun to experience different parts of the city with a personal guide sitting in front of me.
Food was exceptional. We didn’t have Banh Mi or Pho but some very exotic and interesting dishes I’ve never tried before. Being an adventurous eater I got to fully appreciate everything they had to offer. I told them beforehand that I had no dietary restrictions and it really feels like I got an authentic experience for it.
The best thing is that I never would have been able to try this many different types of food if I had explored on my own. Maybe if I had weeks to do research and walk around, but for a very reasonable price I got to experience it all in one evening.
I did not have to get out my wallet once during the trip, everything was paid for by the guides. There was also no limit on how much you could eat or drink, as long as you said you were still hungry they would order more food. Nobody in my group did though as we had already been given more than plenty.
I went on another food tour the day after that was much cheaper. It was still nice but compared to XO Tours it sadly underperformed in every area. My tour with XO was absolutely worth it and I had a great time. I hope I’ll get the chance to go back and go on a tour with them again. I highly recommend them.
Just back from Saigon/HCMC where we treated ourselves (4 of us) to an XO private tour. Highly recommend. This fun and entertaining evening is NOT TO BE MISSED. Who else allows you to taste a variety of local menus, gives you a district-by-district concierge-led city tour (where they do the driving thank goodness) and all hosted by the funniest, loveliest girls you could ever hope to party with. Not only that SO professional a company. Excellent marketing, communication, followup (they take photos and send them to you so you don’t even need to bring your camera – how smart is THAT??). I just love this company. DO NOT MISS THIS.
I really wanted to do the foodie tour, but with an 18month old and a 4 year old in our group I was nervous about how they would do on the scooters and of course their safety. XO were amazing! They had a helmet small enough for my 4 year old, we brought a bike helmet for the younger one and they had safety top of mind with a briefing and telling us how best to ride with them.
Now that was out of the way, it was time to enjoy the ride! What a time we had. 10 of us on a private tour flying through the districts of Saigon learning all about the different areas and trying local food. They skip the tourist traps and really show you the local experience.
I would do it again in a heartbeat and can’t recommend this crew enough!
Booked the Foodie tour for a Saturday night. I was very, very apprehensive about riding on the back of a scooter in the crazy Saigon traffic. I had not ridden on a motorcycle in 45 years. Man, was I wrong. It was EASY to sit and enjoy, and the crazy traffic was a wonderful experience. The food was fun/excellent, but the real selling points of this tour are (1) the perfect organization and conduct of the tour; (2) the ride through multiple districts of the city, getting out of the tourist destinations of District 1 — so much to see outside of District 1; (3) your driver is like a personal tour guide – although the tour is managed by one person – and you are treated like a king/queen. I have to give a very, very special thank you to my driver, Ngan (a world class tour guide: intelligent, funny and comforting as I got into being a bike passenger), and Tai, the tour manager who kept everything organized and running smoothly — giving us an overview at each stop along the way.
I have been on many food tours around the world; this topped them all. I didn’t realize that it would be so professionally operated. In addition to your own personal driver (Ngan was great!), there’s the tour manager Tai, and about 8 other assistants who come along to manage the bikes and film during the trip. This is a big operation, not just a tour where one guide herds you onto a bus to drop you off at various restaurants. There were a total of 13 tourists, including me and my partner, and about 20 XO personnel. So you are well-cared for, even down to the drivers peeling your shrimp and cracking the crab claws. This was quite memorable, and certainly spoiled me for other food tours.
I would definitely do this again. Don’t let the four hour slot scare you off; it went by in a flash.
I just finished watching the 2 movies that XO Tours sent us from our 2 tours taken a few weeks ago in Saigon. Amazing! Great job! We took the night Foodie Tour and the City Tour (9am-12noon) on two different days. We were 2 adults with 2 kids (girls ages 6 & 10). It was our favorite tour during our 3 week trip in Asia. XO is an extremely proficient and professional tour company. They offer such a unique experience. They respond quickly to emails and getting a reservation was easy (but did so well in advance). The extra $35 for the video was so worth it (though I think you need to book way in advance for that also). For each tour we received a well-edited 8-10 minute video that arrived via email 2 weeks later. We even got to pick out our own music, though they can also do that. We are also picking eaters. No meat for 3 of us, mostly vegetarian and some seafood…and they were PERFECT getting us fabulous and amazing new dishes to try. The french fries with sugar and butter was quite a hit with the kids, as were the ice cream cones! The Vietnamese food was authentic, tasted delicious and very plentiful! The girl drivers were fabulous with the kids, entertaining them at the table. My husband loved the great service too. He loved the “girl guides” cracking and peeling his shrimp and crab. We were truly spoiled. Tai was our head tour guide for the Foodie Tour and made us laugh with all his jokes. It was the most special evening on the food tour. Something we will never ever forget. A huge thank you for making our trip so memorable. The price is worth it. And don’t be afraid of driving on a scooter. The girls are great drivers. I can’t say enough good things. If you are in Vietnam and never get a chance to ride a scooter, it would be a shame. This is the place to do it. An unforgettable experience!! (few tips: can store camera or small purse in seat of scooter when traveling, advised not to wear jewelry for safety and they carry great rain coats in case of light rain)
Quite simply, XO Tours is the most fun you can have on two wheels in Ho Chi Minh City! It is so much fun zooming around like a local to all the different districts, places that you usually wouldn’t go, and experiencing the true fresh local street food (so good!). But the best thing about the tours are the XO Girls, they are just truly wonderful! Thank you so much Loan, Kim, Thuy and Quynh – for making this the most fantastic night! We just really enjoyed the night – talking, eating, laughing and learning about the city from these lovely, intelligent, vibrant young ladies. They really are the most beautiful people! I felt like we had made new friends. Our tour leader Khoi was also great, at one stage the girls took the kids to get ice-cream while Khoi gave us a bit of a history lesson on HCMC. Our son Patrick is autistic and we were a bit apprehensive about putting him on the back of a motorbike in all the Ho Chi Minh traffic, but after meeting and talking to the girls we knew he would be OK (thank you Kim for looking after him – he had the most wonderful time!) The girls are all such great and safe drivers! Both our children have said that XO Tours is their favourite thing they did in Vietnam! Us too!
